Meeting Description
Who
- Anyone who enjoys meeting new friends, sports/exercise. It doesn't matter if you're a complete beginner, intermediate or advanced. Everyone is welcome.
Why
- You'll meet some new friends, get some great exercise and probably have a few laughs! Our main focus for this event is to play sports together.

Details
LOCATION: Downtown area, Vancouver.
Please RSVP YES and the specific details, maps, and instructions will be emailed to you 2 days before the start of the event.
VTC MEMBERSHIP: Vancouver Tennis Club events are for authorized members in good standing and volunteers only. You must volunteer to earn and keep a membership.
DONATION: A suggested minimum donation of $2. Pitch in and support our non-profit, volunteer-based club to buy sports equipment, tools, etc. to keep it running.
DATE: Thursday May 15
TIME: 6:15pm to 8:15pm
We will have tennis, outdoors badminton/basketball at this event to accommodate all of our members who love different types of sports. Please specify which sport(s) you would like to play.
WEATHER PERMITTING: The weather report says it will be sunny and 28C this Thursday. All of these outdoor sports are weather dependent. As long as the ground is dry, we'll be playing. If it's wet, we'll re-schedule for another day.
VOLUNTEERS TO WAIT FOR A TENNIS COURT: We need 4 volunteers to wait for 2 tennis courts. In case someone is late or doesn't show up, there should be another member to keep you company. You should arrive at the tennis court at 5:45pm and wait up to a maximum of 30 minutes for a tennis court for our group arriving at 6:15pm. This will save our group time. Thanks in advance.
VTC CLUB MEMBERSHIP: Free if you volunteer and pitch in. You must earn and keep your membership in good status by volunteering, adhering to our policies, participating and contributing.
To attend each event, you should volunteer and pitch in by doing at least one or more of the following things:
- Help with preparations, set-up or take-down at events
- Bring snacks to share
- Wait for a court in advance. This is done by going to the courts at least 30 minutes in advance to reserve a court for our club. When the group arrives, we can start playing right away without waiting.
TENNIS: 12 spots maximum - we will play doubles on two courts and substitute any extra people in.
OUTDOORS BADMINTON: 12 spots maximum - we will play singles and doubles. There will be at least 1 outdoor badminton net (possibly two).
OUTDOORS BASKETBALL: 12 spots maximum - 3 on 3 half court with substitution, full court or American 21 depending on the number of players and preferences.
BACKUP PLAN INDOORS (ONLY IN CASE OF RAIN): In case it rains, we'll have indoors badminton, table tennis/ping pong, billiards, the Snacks Pot "Luck" social and foosball at our usual public facility indoors.
Indoors Badminton is from 6:00pm to 7:45pm. Table tennis, billiards, foosball and the Snacks Pot "Luck" social is from 7:45pm to 9:45pm. The details for the backup plan will be posted in the RSVP info and instructions.
If you want our confirmation and specific details, please RSVP YES and you will be emailed the exact locations, details and instructions 2 days in advance. If anything changes, you will be notified in advance. Thanks for your cooperation.
COSTS OF RUNNING THIS CLUB AND DONATIONS:
A $2 donation will be collected by the VTC organizer at the start of each main activity (badminton and table tennis). Please try bring exact change (a single two dollar coin if possible). The $2 donation goes to our VTC organizer to cover our costs such as the following:
- Meetup account charges, web hosting, development, computer equipment
- recruiting new members, planning future events, time required for reservations, research, write-ups and correspondence
- preparations, reservations, setup, take-down
- office supplies, prints, support, administration, sports equipment, maintenance
Various other costs, manpower, time and resources are required to run this club. So far, only one single person (Derin the VTC organizer) is handling the tasks, paying for the expenses in advance and doing all the work for everyone in our group. Please contribute and volunteer to help out if you can. Thank you very much for supporting our club and keeping it running.
SNACKS POT "LUCK"
First time members should bring a snack as part of their initiation and introduction. Every member who wants to keep their membership in good standing should contribute and bring snacks at least once in a while to our club.
This can be a bag of chips, some chocolates, cookies, beef jerky, pastries, etc. Sometimes we will have snacks, sometimes we won't. This is the "luck" and surprise part. Kudos and karma bonus points to all those who bring snacks to share!
Bring a small sample enough for about 12 people to taste test. If everyone brings a few samples of their favourite snacks, we could be re-energized after our intensive exercise!
CHECK-LIST:
* Water/drinks. You'll probably get hot and thirsty after playing for a while.
* Comfortable clothing and shoes.
